The movie-theater is often a place where women of color who are not particularly good at acting are given roles. It’s a part we don’t see often because we are constantly expected to pretend like we are acting and we are afraid of being seen as a stereotype.
It really boils down to being a woman of color who has the audacity to try to act and get paid for it, to have that audacity to try and act and get paid for it, and to act the damnedest thing you can to get paid for it. It is a whole other thing to be black, and in a world that is saturated in color that is a pretty damn hard thing to do but some men do it.
It’s interesting to think about it, because we don’t do it every week, but we do it every day, and we learn (and learn) what it’s like to wear the same outfit every day and have the same clothes every day, and yet we don’t see the same behavior every day.
Of course, the black community has its own set of values. But as Mark points out, the colorism in Hollywood doesn’t extend to every black person, so it’s a bit of an overstatement to say that every black person is doing what many others are doing. The most obvious example of black people wearing the same clothes for long periods of time is “Grown”. The series follows the adventures of an eclectic ensemble of characters who just happen to be the only black people in the world.
The difference between Grown and Blackout can be summed up as “black people are everywhere but not in my house.” I don’t know what you’re talking about either. I am the only black person in my entire neighborhood and I’ve never had a negative experience with any other black people there. Hell, I’ve had a positive experience with them.
