Most of the time, I’m left wondering how to write a review about a movie. There are a lot of different reasons why I get confused and why I end up posting a review of a movie I have already seen, but the first reason that pops into my head when I start researching films is usually, “Oh, they have to have a big budget to be successful.” Yeah, right.
I think a big budget is what’s preventing me from seeing a lot of Chinese movies. For all of my love of the cinema here in America, I can’t wait until China gets its shit together and starts producing films that are both spectacular and worth your time. It’s not only about the big budget that makes films great, it’s about the quality of the film as well.
Like I said, Chinese films are great because they’re very well done. I’ve watched some of the best Chinese films (like The Grand Canal and Journey to the West) and have to say, yes, they are very good. I don’t know if I’d say they’re great because they’re expensive or because they’re great because they’re expensive.
It’s about time that China started producing great films. Sure, all the good films come from Japan or Korea (just like the American productions), but China has the most diverse film industry in the world and has produced some of the best films of the last ten years. Some of the best Chinese films in the last ten years are the ones directed by Chinese directors who have a wide range of backgrounds, styles, and genres.
Last year I gave a talk on the best Chinese films, and I made the case that the best films are the ones that really push the envelope. In that talk I talked about how these movies don’t just follow a formula, but try to do something new; they try to take the genre and make it more interesting and fresh. While I will say that I have my favorites, it’s not the only thing I try to do.
I think the best chinese films are ones that are a bit more extreme. These movies are more extreme in terms of plot, characters, setting, and action. These are the ones that dont just follow a formula, but try to do something new they try to take the genre and make it more interesting and fresh. While I will say that I have my favorites, its not the only thing I try to do.
