Scary Movie : Iconic Spoof Movie Turns 20

We all have seen comedic movies that usually make fun of major hits movies in the film industry. Meet the Spartans, Fifty shades of black, plus many more. Scary Movie The Horror Comedy.

They may have not been as popular as the original ones but they did make quite a bit of money. The most famous among this list is the Horror movie franchise. Now on the 20th anniversary of it, let see its story!

Franchise Story

It was the late 90s and horror movies were a huge hit and common in the cinema.

The Wayan brothers saw an opportunity that might not be seen by others. They went to the doorstep of Dimension films, a studio run by a great and now-disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein and his brother.

They made a parody movie that broke all previously set rules on how to make movies and even pushed the boundaries of parody movies, hence out-parodying most pop-culture parodies.

It showcased a no-holds-barred take on a lot of iconic scenes and moments from popular and cultural hits from recent movies, television series, and any viral phenomenon. 

There are scenes mocking film classics such as  “Scream,” “The Sixth Sense,” “The Matrix,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “The Blair Witch Project”, and also included moments from many teen cliche movies irrespective of the genre.

The movies, with a very interesting take on the plot, did end up being a massive hit in the summer of 2000.

The movie was over $157 million on a budget of just $19 million, an achievement that baffled everyone in Hollywood especially the critics.

The movie released in northern America on July 7th, 2000, and the plot involves Cindy played by Anna Faris, Bobby by Jon Abrahams, Brenda by Regina Hall, Buffy by Shannon Elizabeth, and Ray by Shawn Wayans. 

They are a group of high school students who kills someone by accident, a take on the plot of “I know what you did last summer”. 

The movie follows the appearances of characters from movies like Scream and many others.

Legacy and future

The undeniable success of the first movie led to the spawn of the franchise which includes 5 movies and rumors of a 6th one.

The Wayans brothers fired during the production of the 3rd sequel and robbed of their idea. However, The movie franchise has made over $896 million.

Ist: Scary Movie (2000)

2nd: Scary Movie 2 (2001) – a parody of The Exorcist and later merger with The haunting.

3rd: Scary Movie 3 (2003) – a parody of The Ring and Signs.

4th: Scary Movie 4 (2006) – This movie parodied War of the Worlds, Saw, The Village, and The Grudge.

5th: Scary Movie 5 (2013) – Jody and Dan Sanders move into their new house after adopting three children. Thus, they record the events using cameras and they discover that an entity is known as “Mama” is haunting them and is trying to claim their children.
